The jet, called the Mighty Dragon, was inducted into China's People's Liberation Army Air Force in March 2017. Made by Sichuan-based Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, the jet is one of the military's most advanced weapons.
The J-20 is only the third-generation fighter in history, following the US-built Lockheed Martin F-22 and F-35. The Chinese Air Force had a fleet of more than 50 J-20s in 2021.

The Chinese jet has been compared to the F-35 as the planes are locked in a military conflict in 2020.
The F-35 was introduced to the US military in July 2015. There are three variants of the aircraft: the F-35A takes off and lands normally, the F-35B takes off and lands vertically, and the F-35C is a carrier. . The difference is in the way the plane takes off and lands.
Lockheed Martin calls the F-35 the "world's most advanced fighter jet," with low-detection stealth, advanced sensors, information fusion and network connectivity.

In a 2020 report, a Hong Kong newspaper said the engine upgrade would "bring its performance closer" to the F-22. WS-15 engine would increase maneuverability and combat capability.

In the early 2000s, the initial price of the plane was quoted at 450 million to 500 million Chinese renminbi, or about $60 million to $70 million, The Diplomat reported. According to estimates from several reports, the cost of the flight has increased significantly since then.
